Getting around
Minsk has an excellent metro system as well as trams, buses and trolleybuses. They all run every day of the year from 5am until late at night and services are frequent.
Things can get a bit cramped at peak times so expect a bit of pushing and shoving but don’t take offence. I once scowled at an old lady who had sent me flying when trying to get on a trolleybus. Her response was to proudly tell me that years of living in Moscow had taught her such skills.
That said, you’re not likely to encounter too much over-crowding on public transport nowadays. More and more Belarusians have access to a car and while traffic jams are still a novelty in most areas of the city, the city centre can get busy in the early evening.
There’s not a lot of communication between passengers on public transport but you may hear somebody say to you “Vi-hod-itse?”. They are asking you if you’re getting off at the next stop so make way for them if you’re not.
