Theatre & Cinema

Theatre

There is no shortage of choice if you fancy a trip to the theatre with around seven performances a night across the city. Sadly there is a shortage of theatre-goers. Many theatres have fallen on hard times since the break up of the Soviet Union due to a lack of funding. This coupled with there simply being so many other things to do in post-Soviet Minsk means interest has slumped. So you’ll rarely struggle to get a ticket. The exceptions are the ballet and opera, which have their own separate page.

Cinema

Minsk has it's first multiplex cinema, the Belarus (Беларусь) at Romanskaya Sloboda 28 (Романовская Слобода 28). It has five halls and can hold over a thousand people. Tickets cost from 7-10,000br. It shows around six different films a day.

Other central cinemas include…
Moskva (Кинотеатр Москва), Prospekt Pobediteley 23 (Проспект Победителей 23)
Oktyabr (Октябрь) Prospekt Nezavisimosti 73 (Проспект Независимости 73)
Pobeda (Победа), Internatsionalnaya 20 (Интернациональная 20)
Tsentralni (Центральный) at Prospekt Nezavisimosti 13 (Проспект Независимости 13).

The latest Hollywood blockbusters now appear in Minsk soon after their release in the West but they are dubbed rather than subtitled so will be of little interest if you don’t speak Russian. However some local embassies organise film festivals where the films are shown in their original language.

Titanic was the film that changed the cinema-going habits of Belarusians. Until that point most cinemas offered a bland selection of aging Hollywood movies such as Robocop and Rambo, screened to a scattering of people with nothing better to do or couples who required a bit of privacy in the back row. But in a propaganda coup the authorities bought the rights to Titanic soon after its release and the country’s cinemas were packed every night for a month, with tickets like gold dust.
